Omar Salmah Mosque.
Masjid Omar Salmah is a heritage mosque with unique architectural features of a Kampung Mosque that invokes the nostalgic ambience of a rural setting not easily found in urbanized Singapore. Based on mutual goodwill of the residents of Kampung Jantai, the name of the mosque was derived from the late parents of Mr Syed Ibrahim; Mr Syed Omar and Mdm Salmah. The cost of construction estimated at $50, 000 was donated by Mr Syed Ibrahim, then Consulate of Saudi Arabia in Singapore. Increased Jemaah usage of the old Kampung Jantai Surau spurred the building of Masjid Omar Salmah to replace the latter. The most recent work was started in June 2012 to improve basic facilities like the toilets and ablution area.
Today, Masjid Omar Salmah continues to be the focal point for Muslims working within the Thomson area to congregate even after the resettlement of the villagers of Kampung Jantai in the early 80s. The mosque has a strong following of congregators from the working class ranging from office workers to taxi drivers.
Masjid Omar Salmah has gone through several upgrading works to meet the needs of the increased number of congregators. The combination of both names results in the current name of Masjid Omar Salmah located at 411B Jalan Mashhor, Singapore 299173.
Masjid Omar Salmah was built in 1973/74 on elevated grounds surrounded by shady trees in Kampong Jantai along Jalan Mashhor. In early 2000 the roof of the mosque was repaired. The earliest work on the mosque was started in the early 80s by one of the former resident, the late Haji Jan who expanded the external area and surroundings at the cost of around $60K. The former residents of Kampung Jantai and those seeking solace from the bustling city life continue to return to the mosque.
Masjid Omar Salmah remains the choice of congregators for Friday and Hari Raya prayers, accommodating up to 500 congregators.
