The founding history of The Straits Trading Company Limited can be traced to the 19th century with the formation of a partnership for tin smelting between James Sword, a Scottish businessman, and Herman Muhlinghaus, a German entrepreneur.
It is a privately-held investment group of companies founded by the late banker and philanthropist, Tan Sri (Dr) Tan Chin Tuan, who was also Chairman of Straits Trading for more than 20 years since 1965.
