Those living in the East may once have been familiar with Yokoso, one of the first 24-hour supermarkets (now defunct). And it has survived with the support of mostly Muslim regulars. Started by a Hainanese family in 1981, this restaurant's halal menu has strong Chinese touches. Tenants come and go in this building, but Di-Tanjong Katong Restaurant is one of the few remaining after all of these years. But the building that housed it - Tanjong Katong Complex - may hardly ring a bell. Therein lies the beauty of living in a multi-racial society that we can experience various cultures right down to cooking methods and food types unique to each group.
